Alex Wilson Inglaterra

Inglaterra is my fifth album and is the latest chapter in my musical journey which began in the mid-90's when I started to play salsa piano in London bands. I then went on to experiment with latin jazz, took a trip to Havana to record my second album Anglo Cubano, worked on combining modern R&B with salsa on the R&B Latino album, learnt about Afro-Colombian music and how to mix it with mainstream jazz on Aventuras and to complete the circle have now recorded a Alex Wilson-style salsa album Inglaterra.

All the tracks on the album are for the dance floor (I have set my jazziness aside for another album) and all are salsa or reggaeton mixed with the influences encountered during my career.

So, from the song made famous by Nat King Cole and George Benson, Nature Boy, to the original salsa-soul composition, Show Me, to a version of Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody and the bhangra-salsa sound of Oh Kuri this album I feel encapsulates the vibrancy of the London scene today ... enjoy.

For his latest, most ambitious recording to date, pianist-bandleader Alex Wilson spices up his Latin floor-fillers with R&B beats, a salsified soul cover (Ain't Nobody, sung by Aquilla Fearon) and the world's first slice of bhangra-salsa. Featuring tabla player Kuljit Bhamra and singer Shahid Abbas Khan, Oh Kuri fuses the syncopations of Latin dance music with the twiddly triplets of Brit-Asian bhangra - a very appealing mix that doesn't sell either ingredient short.

Anyone who has been knocked sideways by Wilson's playing on a Courtney Pine or Jazz Jamaica gig should be warned that this is not a jazz album (and there are no piano solos). However, there are some great trombone bits (Trevor Mires) and a host of guest vocalists, including Mary Pearce (on the catchy Show Me), Alfonso de Jesus and Osvaldo Chacon. Sometimes it's more like a collection of 12-inchers than an album, but it's held together by Wilson's tough, authentic piano-playing.
